Top 10 Video Game Franchises of All Time

What makes a video game great? Some would say graphics and game-play, while others seek out a compelling storyline. While there are as many games out there now as there are companies making them, there are some names that stand out year after year. The best games are those that not only provide the best mix of entertainment, storyline, and graphics, but also revolutionize the gaming industry. Here we present you our list of the top 10 video games of all time. Our list is based on overall entertainment value, the recognisability of the brand, game play and the ability to carve a new path for games that followed.

(Before we proceed it should be noted that World of Warcraft was intentionally omitted from this list. This is because we believe that WoW is not a game, but a lifestyle: a lifestyle we at CAVE don’t condone).

Honourable Mentions:

Madden

Pac-Man

Doom

10. Mortal Kombat

For some surprising reason, the MK series doesn’t land on every gaming critic’s top list, but I think it should. Mortal Kombat was not the first arcade fighting game, but it was definitely one of the best.  Mortal Kombat offered us interesting characters with interesting back stories and also had realistic graphics (for its time) that made it all the more fun. We may also credit Mortal Kombat as being one of the games that led the way for stricter game ratings.

9. Grant Theft Auto

One of the most successful franchises in the gaming world, GTA’s games offered players the ability to run around and wreak havoc in an open world. Grand Theft Auto III, in particular, is acknowledged as one of the best games of the Action/Adventure genre, paving the way for many other similar games that followed.

8. Final Fantasy

Known for its innovative game design and visually stunning graphics, Final Fantasy is among the best-selling brands of role-playing fantasy games. The Final Fantasy is often credited with popularizing console-based role-playing games outside of Japan.

7. Resident Evil

Another thing to thank the Japanese for (besides cars and Pocky Sticks). The Resident Evil franchise offers action and horror, a delicious combination for the avid gamer. Although Resident Evil 4 is often regarded as the best of the series, the entire line is considered revolutionary for popularizing the Action/Horror genre. Besides offering a post-apocalyptic settings and compelling storylines, the games are well-regarded for their use of puzzle-solving, something that has become more fervent in games that followed.
