Sure, most people figured Harbaugh would have success coaching in the NFL, but not nearly this quick. He was able to turn Alex Smith into the perfect game manager to win 13 games and secure a bye week. Last year the 49ers had some talent and underperformed, but this transformation surprised everyone.

At this time last year Carson Palmer had just thrown his last pass as a Bengal, but no one knew that. He didn’t start demanding a trade until later in the offseason. With the uncertain Palmer situation, the Bengals drafted Andy Dalton early in the second round. The Bengals would ride their defense, AJ Green and Dalton’s right arm to the playoffs and turn what everyone thought would be a rebuilding year into a wild card berth.
